Future Project Ideas

This blog chronicles my journey to the centre of VoIP.  I plan to tackle interesting projects that deliver real world benefit and detail what I learn.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Replace my Vonage home phone with a do it myself version. Done!  See the writeup.
  • Mashup 37signals’ Highrise with Lypp so that I can easily select a group of contacts and initiate a conference call.
  • Set up an Asterisk server with basic IVR functionality for our home (press 1 to talk to my wife, 2 to press to me, etc.).
  • Create a call back feature using Asterisk so that I can call long distance on my cell for < 2 cents per minute.  I could drop the minutes on my cell and then pay to get unlimited incoming and outgoing calls to 5 numbers.  One of those numbers would be my Asterisk PBX.  I would never give out my true cell number: everything would be routed through the PBX.  Voila!  I get cheap cell service.
  • Figure out how to parse voice mail with a speech to text engine then send text messages to my cell with the voice mail message so I don’t have to call in to hear it.  Perhaps I could use the Jott API or tie in with Dial2Do.com.

I better get cracking!
